Turn off the lights Dudley
Wouldn't it be great if your dogs could turn out the lights - especially when you settle in for a little a little snooze on the couch after a turkey dinner? Well if that's your dream, here's how to teach it:
- First make sure your dog can reach the switch when on his back legs, for smaller dogs try placing a sturdy table under the light switch.
- Hold the treat at the light switch and give the command "turn out the light" or "light off".
- When your dog jumps up to get the treat, make sure his paws touch the switch. Reward with the treat and by saying "Good light off" or whatever your command was.
- Gradually start to stand away from the switch and send the dog over to turn the lights out on his own.
- Toss the treat when the dog jumps up and paws at the light and reward.
This is a great exercise for those that want to train their dogs in agility as it practices targeting and helps dogs learn to manipulate an object, as well as just being doggone convenient!
If you're looking for a bit of help around the house, then Dudely just may be your man.
