Bringing home Puppy Persephone

In case anyone is thinking of bringing home a new puppy for the holidays (what a fantastic idea!) we thought we'd share a few tips on introducing a new dog to a family that already has a dog.

  • Be very patient with both dogs, but ensure you spend quality, alone time with the original dog.  Often people are very excited over a new dog or puppy, and anxious to work with the new dog on training.  The first dog was used to receiving a lot of attention now feels left out and jealous of the new dog.  Ensuring the first dog maintains a level of attention (and treats!) will go a long way to helping them accept the new dog.
  • Provide them each their own food and water bowls and separate them so there is no competition at meal times.  They will likely drink from each other's water bowls and sniff at the plates, but having their own set makes things easier.
  • If your older dog is feed once a day, and you plan to feed your puppy multiple times a day, you may want to consider breaking up your older dog's meals so that he eats as often as the puppy.  Though not everyone does this, if you feed one and not the other, it can create animosity, or even fights over food.
  • When introducing them, supervise playtime until you are sure they are comfortable together.
